Ngorongoro crater size is the world’s largest broken caldera that is found in Tanzania. The Ngorongoro crater National park was named after the great volcanic caldera found in the center of the park. The conservation area is under the management of Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. The Authority is an arm of the Tanzania Government which is part of ministry of Tourism. The crater remains one of the key attraction around the conservation area.  The crater is located in the Western part of the tourism city that is Arusha. The crater is famous with the high predator population especially the lions. It was voted as the 7th natural wonder of Africa in Arusha in February 2013. With the great biodiversity found in the crater, Ngorongoro crater was declared as World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.Ngorongoro crater size

The area was named by the local Maasai people who inhabit the area as Ngorongoro which means the Cow bell. The Ngorongoro crater size is around 260 square kilometers in the radius of the floor. The depth of the crater is 610 meters deep which is an equivalent of 2,000 feet. The size of the fallen volcano that formed the crater was estimated to be in the range of the African highest peak that is Mt Kilimanjaro. The volcano was estimated to be around 4500 meters to 5,800 meters high. The Ngorongoro crater size (the crater floor) currently is around 5,900 feet (1,800 meters) above the sea level. The crater was believed to be had been formed 2 to 3 million years ago.

Most of the Ngorongoro crater size is dominated by the open Savannah grassland where most grazing animals are found. Some part of the Ngorongoro crater size is taken by the alkaline soda lake found at the center of the crater. While the Northern part is covered by the swamp area where the hippo pool is found. The Elephants frequent the swamp area especially during the hot dry season of the year. The Ngorongoro crater is located in the North Tanzania famous tourist circuit that is composed of great national parks like Tarangire Np, Lake Manyara Np, Serengeti Np and Ngorongoro crater.Its found about 180 kilometers away from Arusha along the Great Rift Valley region area. The floor dimensions of the crater helps us to have rough estimate on the Ngorongoro crater size. The 100 square miles valley that raises to the great elevation of around 5,900 feet above sea level.  The crater is drained by several small lakes and rivers that are found within the crater elevation.

Ngorongoro conservation area is one of the most affected area by volcanic activity. This resulted in to the formation of more volcanic calderas where some were filled with water and formed the crater lakes like Lkae Olmoti and Lake Empakaai. The Maasai locals use these lakes as water catchment area for their livestock and themselves for domestic use. Up to date there are some active volcanic mountains around the conservation area. In 2007 and 2008 Kerisimasi and Ol Doinyo Lengai erupted. This made the locals to call the rocks the Mountain of God.

However much Ngorongoro crater size is not as big as expected but it inhabits large population of animals. The game drives at the crater are amazing with more assurity of all African big five found (lions, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes and Elephants) Descending to the crater one has to pay the crater service fees.
