Kidepo Valley National Park lies in the rugged, semi-arid valleys between Uganda’s borders with Sudan and Kenya, some 700km from Kampala. Gazette as a national park in 1962, it has a profusion of big game and hosts over 77 mammal species as well as around 475 bird species. Kidepo is the most Uganda’s isolated protected area, found around the border between Uganda and South Sudan in Karamoja area. The park has worn several awards as the most African finest wilderness. The park is located near Karenga  Karamoja in Kaabong District in the North Eastern part of Uganda.

The park is managed by Uganda wildlife Authority, it was established in 1958. Till to date Kidepo valley national park is one of the best and virgin tourist destination in Uganda. Kidepo valley national park covers a total land area of 1,442 kilometers dominated by the rugged savannah grassland dotted with Acacia trees and some rocky surfaces. The park is drained by the Narus River which is found at the center of the park. The park is located 220 kilometers northwest of Moroto town. This is also the largest town near the park where some of the accommodations are found. The park is dominated by the rugged Savannah vegetation dotted with some Acacia trees. The park is generally flat transected by two main rivers those are Narus river and Kidepo river. Mount Morungole is a home of the Ike unique people. The mountain is one of the attractions found in the park. The climate of the park is hot and dry with some little rains during the rainy season. It receives two rainy seasons with the early rains from May to June being much. It experiences long dry season but the survival of the wildlife is based on the seasonal rivers and the valleys.

The other animals include: Lions, Elephants, Zebras, Buffaloes, Giraffes, over 12 species of Antelopes and many more. Birds

Kidepo valley national park is one of the best destinations for bird lovers. Its regarded as little paradise of birds in Uganda. The park hosts over 480 bird species that can be easily seen any time of the year though the best time is from March to April. The parks hosts over 28 species of birds from the Somali-Masai savanna biomes. It hosts the second highest number of bird species in Uganda after Queen Elizabeth national park. Kidepo valley is the only IBA that is located in the entire Somali-Masai biome. It homes rare bird species like Karamoja Aapalis, Black-breasted Barbet and many others.

Apoka Tourism Center

The Apoka Tourism center is located overlooking the enrich popular game area that is Narus Valley. The center is information place where you can get all the necessary information about the park. You can also hire a guide at this spot incase you are on private safari. The guides are always stationed here, you can do craft shopping and many more.

Narus Valley

This is the destination where all game drives are done in Kidepo valley national park. It is a water catchment area that attracts all sorts of wildlife at the area especially during the rainy season. The valley has four loop circuits that the tourists use to explore the best of Kidepo valley national park.

Mount Morungole

This is the highest point at the park standing at 2,750 meters, its crossed by the two drainage channels at the park those are River Kidepo and river Narus. It’s also a boundary that naturally controls the movement of the wildlife to cross the other side of the park. The mountain can be trekked on foot giving you the great scenic aerial view of the park. The mountain is stettled by the unique IK tribe which has one of the unique cultures in Uganda. Ranger can take you there on foot for cultural tours.

Kanangorok Hot springs

The Kanangorok Hot springs is one of the other attraction that is found in the park. The hot springs lie just 11 kilometers from the famous Kidepo River near the Sudan border with Uganda. Its worth visiting to see the natural behavior of the world that is isolated in hidden at the border. You pass through the borassus palm where locals go and collect the palm for making the local brew.
