Volcanoes national park which in French called Parc National Des Volcans and Pariki y’Igihugu Y’ibirunga by the local Kinyarwanda. It’s one of the world’s famous national park that inhabits the rare Mountain Gorillas. It’s among the five national parks in the world that home the Mountain Gorillas. It lies on the great volcanoes region which includes the Mgahinga gorilla national park, Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Virunga national park. The park is located in the North-Western province of Rwanda. It’s found near the small town of Musanze which was formally known as Ruhengeri town. It lies near the border of Uganda and Rwanda just few kilometers top the country borders. Volcanoes national park which shelters the five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains. The 5 volcanoes found in Volcanoes  park Rwanda include: Mount Bisoke, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Mgahinga, Mount Muhabura nd Mount Sabyinyo. It remains the oldest national park not only in Kenya but entire African continent.

Its is bordered by Mgahinga Gorilla National park of Uganda and Virunga national park of Democratic Republic of Congo. The park covers 160 square kilometers of rain forests hence making the majority of the park to be dominated by the rain forests. Volcanoes national park is a home of Mountain Gorillas and golden monkey. It also homes long list of bird species especially the rainforest bird species.  It is also known as the base of the famous primatologists Dian Fossey who stayed and build at the top of the park as she was doing her research on primates. Dian Fossey arrived at the park in 1967 and later set up a research center called Karisoke Research Center. It was built in between Visoke and Karisimbi that is why she combined the names of the two places to name the center. She spent all her entire life in the conservation of the Mountain Gorillas. She was then murdered in her home by unknown people in 1985, the film of Gorillas in the mist show much of her life and effort to conserve mountain Gorillas.

Volcanoes national park Rwanda  is the oldest national park in Africa, it was first gazette in 1925. The first gazette covered only the small part of Karisimbi, Mikeno and Bisoke. The main aim of the gazette was to protect the mountain Gorillas from poachers. In 1929 the borders of Volcanoes national park were increased or enlarged.

Attractions in the park

Volcanoes national park is famous of its mountain gorillas. The park hosts over half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the World. Its is one of the key destination where Rwanda got its name “the land of thousand hills”. Its gifted by nature, it’s among the few national park in world where a guest can see Golden monkeys as well as mountain Gorillas. Below are the different attractions at the park.

Mountain Gorillas

These are the famous attraction of the park, you can do a complete Rwanda safari without doing Gorilla trekking. The park hosts over half of the remaining mountain Gorillas which are living in families. The park has over 10 gorilla families with some being habituated for tourism while others are for research. There are also some Gorilla families that are not yet even habituated hence they cannot be visited by tourists.

Golden Monkeys

Golden monkey is the second famous attraction in Volcanoes national park. They are found on the mountain bamboo vegetation. They are all habituated troops of Golden monkeys that can be tracked by tourists. There are over 80 habituated golden monkeys in Volcanoes national park that are tracked daily by travelers.

Mountain

The Volcanoes national park hosts 5 of the 8 virunga mountains. This have attracted hikkers which donot need much hiking experience in order to reach to the top. It always takes 2 to 5 hours depending on the mountain and the physical ability of the guests. The five mountains found at the park include: Mount Bisoke, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Mgahinga, Mount Muhabura nd Mount Sabyinyo.

Birds

The park has over 200 bird species with the long list dominated by the forest birds. The songs of the birds are always wake up calls. Some of the birds found at the park include: Grauer’s rush warbler, Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori double –collared Sunbird, handsome francolin, strange weaver, dusky crimson-wing, collared Apalis, red-faced woodland warbler and Archer’s ground robin.

Dian Fossey Tomb

The famous primatologist after her brutal death was buried inside the park. Todate many tourists flock to the park and hike to see the tomb of the renown Dian Fossey. It is one of the key attractions in Volcanoes national park.
